Picnic With St. Timothy
On August 25 we will gather together with St. Timothy in the Valley at their location for worship and a
fellowship lunch. Worship will begin at 10:30 AM. St. Timothy will provide the hamburgers and
hotdogs as well as the paper products, and we will provide ice and beverages. Everyone is asked to
bring side dishes of your choice to share! Please plan to attend as we show our camaraderie with our Christian brothers and sisters in our community. A sign-up sheet will be on the bulletin board beginning August 4. This will give St. Timothy an idea of how many hot dogs and hamburgers to buy.
Summer is almost here and our Sunday School class and Hauerwas group have begun their summer break. We’d like to thank Clifford Smith and Pastor Wicker for leading and guiding us in our Sunday studies this year. Also, don’t forget that we have a well- stocked library with a large variety of materials that will help you continue your spiritual growth during the summer. If you haven’t visited the library yet, stop by and see what we have. Plan to stay after worship for a few minutes on June 2 and help Maddy and Gavin Goff celebrate their confirmation. We will celebrate with them and also welcome new members. Be sure to join us at the reception after worship.
This year, we will be sending four young people to Camp Luther –Gavin, Maddy, Cora, Nathan, and Sada will begin camp on Sunday, June 16. Remember to keep them in your prayers as they set forth on this adventure.
As you enter the church, you will see three boxes labeled School Items, Travel, and Coffee/Tea. These are items that we are collecting for different causes. School Items: School items are being collected to help with the Putnam County Back to School Bash to enable children to begin the new school year with all of the essential supplies. There is a list of items requested, but basically any school supplies for Kindergarten through high school are needed from backpacks to pencils. Travel: Items that would be useful for travel, such as travel size toiletries, travel sized puzzle books, travel containers, or anything else that would make travel more comfortable or enjoyable. Coffee/Tea: Items such as different coffees, flavored creamers, flavored teas, cups, mugs, and anything coffee or tea themed. The Travel and Coffee/Tea boxes will be for the baskets that the COG women will take to the annual WELCA of WV-MD Synod convention August 10 and 11 at Huttonsville. The baskets will be part of their silent auction. The proceeds from the baskets go to the Lutheran Campus Ministry at WVU and Community Lutheran Partners. Any contributions that you can make to the WELCA baskets and the Back to School Bash will be greatly appreciated. The collection of items for all three boxes will continue through August 6
The WELCA Bible study has moved to a new location. Last month, the group met at the Grind restaurant in St. Albans for Bible study and lunch and decided to do the same for the May session. The group will meet at the Grind, near the St. Albans Krogers, on Wednesday, May 8, at 11:00. We invite you to join us for lunch and Bible study based on the lesson from the Gather magazine. This month’s study is a devotional, entitled “From generation to generation:Two-way blessings”.
The WELCA Bible Study group, which meets the second Wednesday of each month, is another opportunity for learning. This group is open to everyone, not just women. The current study, taken from the Gather magazine, is written by Mark Allan Powell and deals with learning from other interpretations of Bible texts. An additional opportunity for group study is with the Wednesday evening reading of the book, The Evangelizing Church. Members of this group have many positive remarks about what they are learning. We also have the Saturday morning Hauerwas group, but it is currently taking a small break and will resume after Easter. We encourage you to take advantage of all that COG has to offer for your faith journey.
